Description

Join the members of Trian - Liz Carroll, Billy McComiskey, and Dáithí Sproule - for a day of Irish music workshops, interview, community lunch and a Saturday night concert. We welcome all instrumentalists, singers and music enthusiasts to join in this wonderful one-day celebration of traditional Irish music and culture.

Add Accordion Workshop with Billy McComiskey
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Billy McComiskey grew up in a family steeped in traditional Irish heritage and music. He began playing button accordion at age six, inspired by his uncles’ playing and his mother’s love of the music. Billy won the All-Ireland Senior accordion title in 1986. He has recorded three albums with the Irish Tradition (a trio featuring Brendan Mulvihill and Andy O’Brien) and two with Trian (a trio featuring Liz Carroll and Dáithí Sproule), as well as two solo CDs for Green Linnet / Compass. Billy also composes in the Irish traditional idiom, and has had the honor to have several tunes accepted into the living tradition, including collection into Josephine Keegan’s new collection of Irish Traditional Tunes, A Drop in the Ocean. He won the Irish Echo’s Album of the Year for his 2008 Outside the Box and was their 2011 Traditional Artist of the Year. Billy teaches musicians all over the world, as well as in his home state, as a master through the Maryland Traditions apprenticeship program. He has been invited to share his outstanding talents at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and throughout the U.S., Ireland, and beyond. In 2016, Billy was named a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow.

Add Irish Fiddle with Liz Carroll (Intermediate/Advanced Level)
Don't miss this opportunity to learn from the award-winning Irish fiddler, Liz Carroll. In these fiddle workshops, Liz will play for you and teach music and technique from her repertoire, including original and traditional tunes. In addition to being one of the first American women to win the prestigious Senior fiddle title at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil (many years ago!), Liz is the 2011 TG4 Composer of the Year, a NEA National Heritage Fellow (1994), and the first Irish-American musician ever nominated for a Grammy.

Add Irish Songs and Guitar with Dáithí Sproule (Intermediate level)
In this workshop Dáithí will share some favorite beautiful traditional songs from his repertoire, providing lyric sheets with chords, and throw in some advice and background — come sing and play! If you don’t play, come and sing! If you don’t sing, come and play! If you don’t sing or play, come and listen! There should be some fun chat too!

Add Liz Carroll - An Interview with Dáithí Sproule
Join Altan's guitarist and CIM instructor, Dáithí Sproule as he interviews legendary Irish fiddler and composer, Liz Carroll in a casualand intimate setting at the Celtic Junction. Liz Carroll won the prestigious title Senior All-Ireland Championship on fiddle when she was 18. Recently, she has been honored with many accolades, including a nomination for a 2010 Grammy, with John Doyle, for their duet album, "Double Play." In April of 2011, Liz was awarded the Cumadóir TG4, the first American-born composer honored with Ireland's most significant traditional music prize.
