Irish Myths and Legends

Irish mythology is rich and deep -- the stories have a timeless appeal full of adventure, intrigue and otherworld magic.  Daithi and the class will read translations of the oldest versions of some of the myths, filling in the background from Dáithí's studies of Celtic culture, and encouraging conversation and discussion about what the stories may mean to us.

Spring semester, Dáithí and the class will focus on reading The Táin — The Cattle-Raid of Cooley — the great epic of early Irish literature and myth, using Thomas Kinsella’s translation of the oldest version, filling in the background from Dáithí's studies of Celtic culture, and encouraging conversation and discussion about what the stories may mean to us. The Táin features some of the greatest characters of Irish literature — Cú Chulainn, Queen Maeve, Fergus mac Roich and the Bodb, the Raven Goddess of doom and the battle-field.

Songs in Irish Gaelic
This is a class for people who want to learn and enjoy beautiful songs in the Irish language and have a deep desire to do it as well and as correctly as they can! Students will receive detailed coaching on pronunciation and style and on the background to the songs. Dáithí has been singing these songs all his life; he has a firm belief that singing is a great way to become familiar with the language, but that you don't need to know the language to sing the songs well.

The Songs of Frank Harte
No other Irish traditional singer or song collector ever amassed such a large and wide-ranging repertoire as Dublin man Frank Harte (1933-2005). Though renowned for his Dublin street ballads and Napoleonic pieces, he sang all sorts of old songs, always with intimacy, joy and commitment, and left behind his collection of field recordings of as many as 15.000 song performances by other singers. (Hear him here at a singing session) We are lucky that Frank recorded many wonderful albums that are still available, and we will select from these to sing and learn in class.

The Songs of Mrs. Elizabeth Cronin

Elizabeth Cronin of Baile Bhuirne in West Cork is one of the most prominent names in traditional Irish singing and song, often mentioned in our classes. We thought it would be well worthwhile to have a course devoted to her alone. Her repertoire included songs in both English and Irish, love songs, funny songs, children songs and great ballads, and many wonderful songs are known today because they were collected from her by such famous folk scholars as Séamus Ennis, Alan Lomax, Jean Ritchie and Diane Hamilton, who made the trek to her door in the Cork Gaeltacht to collect her riches. We will learn a range of her songs, study her intricate style and share background on her and her world.
