Children and Youth Ensembles



Advanced Youth Ensemble

This ensemble is for accomplished young Irish musicians with a large repertoire of tunes who are able to play confidently with solid rhythm, groove and accuracy. As young ambassadors for the CIM, the ensemble performs regularly around the Twin Cities.

Required commitments for the spring term are:

Feb 23 - Éigse CIM, A Gaela Event (sound check at noon with evening performance), March 16 or 17 - IMDA St. Patrick's Day events at the Landmark Center and April 26-28 - Midwest Regional Fleadh in Chicago.

Starting March 20th, intensive fleadh rehearsals begin. Rehearsal time will be split into two halves until the fleadh weekend. The U18 grúpa ceoil practices from 4:45-5:30pm, U18 ceili band practices from 5:30-6:15pm. Regular schedule will resume after the fleadh on 5/1.

Redwing Intermediate Ensemble

Your playing will improve in leaps and bounds in the Redwing intermediate ensemble!  If you've been playing for a few years and have 10-15 tunes by ear, this is the perfect opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the tradition in a fun, social environment.

Starling Intermediate Ensemble

Experience the joys and challenges of playing in a group such as arranging tunes in sets, learning melodic and harmonic variations and lots of new repertoire!

Starling Ensemble is a fun and challenging class for young intermediate-advanced musicians who are well on their way with Irish music. Starling ensemble students know lots of tunes and can play them with solid rhythm and groove. Often this group is involved in the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil competition which will be hosted in Chicago from April 26-28th.

Spring term: From Jan 30-March 13, rehearsals will be preparing for St. Patrick's Day season performances. Starting March 20th, rehearsal time will be split into two halves until the fleadh weekend:

-4:45-5:30pm - Regular Starling Ensemble rehearsal

-5:30-6:15pm - u15 ceili band

*Regular schedule will resume after the fleadh on 5/1.*Starling ensemble members who are 15 or older as of 1/1/18 are welcome to sit in on the Wren ensemble rehearsals during the intensive fleadh prep season or choose to finish ensemble early at 5:30pm. Contact Hannah to adjust your account.

Swallowtail Intermediate Ensemble

Your playing will improve in leaps and bounds in the Swallowtail ensemble!  If you've been playing for a few years and have 10-15 tunes by ear, this is the perfect opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the tradition in a fun, social environment. If you are a new ensemble student, please contact us before enrolling.

This term, many Swallowtail members are considering attending and competing at the Midwest Regional Fleadh in Chicago on April 26-28, 2019. If you are interested in attending, please consult the Midwest Fleadh page on our website. In addition to solo competitions, you may want consider competing in a duet or trio with another student at the school (another Swallowtail ensemble member). Wren Intermediate Ensemble
This ensemble is for learning to play together with fellow musicians, challenging one another to learn new tunes and belt them out with great rhythm and style. As a group, the Wren Intermediate Ensemble is non-competitive, however all CIM musicians are welcome to compete in the Midwest Fleadh in his or her capacity as soloist, duet or trio. Taught by flute player and uilleann piper Sean Gavin (rumor has it he plays a little fiddle as well), with occasional assistance from Dáithí Sproule.
