Children and Youth Ensembles

Advanced Youth Ensemble

This ensemble is for accomplished young Irish musicians with a large repertoire of tunes who are able to play confidently with solid rhythm, groove and accuracy. As young ambassadors for the CIM, the ensemble performs regularly around the Twin Cities.

The Advanced Youth Ensemble is a competitive group that commits to attending the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil every year. As such, ensemble members must be under 18 as of January 1st of the year of the Midwest Fleadh. Musicians who have later birthdays in their senior year are encouraged to join the Young Adult Ensemble, or discuss other options with our director Norah Rendell. This ensemble is co-directed by Brian Miller and Norah Rendell.

The 2020 Midwest Fleadh is in Chicago on May 15-17.

Harp Ensemble - Youth
This ensemble is open to young intermediate harp players wishing to improve their own playing and enjoy playing with other harpers in a fun and supportive environment. In this class we will learn and arrange tunes and have fun learning the harp together!
Come ready to learn and explore the many different ways the harp can be played and used in an ensemble setting. This ensemble will work towards performing at the Fall recital, plus a few classes after to keep the momentum going. Due to logistics and music-learning over a short number of classes, members of this ensemble must currently be taking private lessons with Hannah Flowers.

Starling Intermediate Ensemble

Experience the joys and challenges of playing in a group such as arranging tunes in sets, learning melodic and harmonic variations and lots of new repertoire!

Starling Ensemble is a fun and challenging class for young intermediate-advanced musicians who are well on their way with Irish music. Starling ensemble students know lots of tunes and can play them with solid rhythm and groove.

Members of this group will most likely be involved at the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil competition, hosted in Chicago on the weekend of May 15-17, 2020, so we are asking members to commit to this date upon registration in the fall. The Starlings also perform for CIM on a regular basis.
